SUMMARY:Hartford Summer Bird Count Summary - June 13-14\, 2020
DESCRIPTION:HARTFORD SUMMER BIRD COUNT SUMMARY – JUNE 13-14 2020 \nWhat a strange year this has been!  After some question as to whether there should even be Summer Bird Counts (SBC) in Connecticut the decision was made to hold them as scheduled.  It was reasoned that birding lends itself nicely to social distancing and the Hartford SBC was held with the recommendation that people go out individually or only with family members rather than in larger groups. \nJune 13th-14th 2020 provided great weather on both days of the weekend.  There was concern that participation might suffer because of  COVID-19\, however\, this proved not to be the case as over 60 observers spread out over the Hartford area as compared to 38 participants in 2019.   That is not to say that there were not issues. \nIn the Hartford area\, we were denied access to the campus of the University of Hartford from which we access the Park River and the areas behind the magnet school.  Apparently the campus is closed without authorized permission to enter. \nWe will check into this before December’s Christmas Bird Count.  In addition to more participants\, this year also saw a significant increase in party hours as a total of 195 far exceeded last year’s 127.5 party hours. \nTotal species came in at 110\, a decrease by two from 2019\, and included one rather astonishing report.  A possible Western Meadowlark was observed and photographed in the Glastonbury meadows.  Although we are including this sighting on our report for now\, this record has been forwarded to the Avian Record Committee for evaluation.   A decision will probably not come until after the Committee’s annual meeting in early 2021.   Although nothing compares to this sighting\, additional birds of note included a Great Egret in Wethersfield (last year a bird was seen across the Connecticut River in Glastonbury)\, an American Woodcock and Yellow-rumped Warbler in East Hartford\, a Herring Gull in Hartford\, a Sharp-shinned Hawk in Glastonbury\, a Blue-headed Vireo in Bloomfield\, and a Worm-eating Warbler in West Hartford. \nOther species went unreported this year.  The marshes of South Windsor and Glastonbury did not produce any Sora or Virginia Rails this year\, perhaps due to the drought?  A number of species\, represented by a single individual in 2019\, did not return this year.  These included Mute Swan\, Ring-necked Pheasant\, Tri-colored Heron\, and Brown Thrasher.  Grasshopper Sparrow was missed for the second consecutive year\, although other grassland birds were well represented. \nA single American Kestrel was reported from South Windsor\, while at least two Peregrine Falcon nests provided 7 of these magnificent raptors.  Ospreys continue to increase as there are now at least a half dozen nests in the greater Hartford area.  Twenty ospreys\, a new high count\, were tallied on this year’s Count. Bald Eagles are also doing well with several nests reported along the Connecticut River and 15 eagles reported. \nWith regard to swallows\, the small Purple Martin colony in Glastonbury is hanging on with five birds reported.  Cliff Swallows in Bloomfield\, West Hartford and Windsor totaled 40 birds between these three sites.   Although our Count tallied 11 warbler species\, several were in very low numbers.  I do believe that more extensive coverage in the West Hartford Reservoir system and in the woodlands in Manchester might increase these numbers.  Rentschler Field\, once the premier site for grassland birds\, is now no longer accessible and is being managed in such a way that it is no longer providing habitat for grassland species.   Let us hope the few remaining grassland habitats will continue into the future. \nThe Hartford SBC\, has now completed its thirtieth year\, providing information on the status of breeding bird populations in the Hartford area.  In the third season of what was a three year\, but has become a four year state-wide atlasing project\, the Summer Bird Count continues to add valuable data to this worthy effort.  As compiler\, I thank the area captains and the 62 participants who donated their time to participate in the Count this year.  Results of ours and the other Connecticut SBCs will be published in an upcoming edition of The Connecticut Warbler\, quarterly journal of the Connecticut Ornithological Association.  For more information on the atlasing project\, go to www.ctbirdatlas.org \nA full accounting of the species found on the Hartford Count is available by e-mailing me at jaybrd49@aol.com \nJay Kaplan\, Compiler \nHartford Summer Bird Count \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:UPDATED: December 20\, 2020 - Christmas Bird Counts - Sunday - All Day
DESCRIPTION:TO ALL HARTFORD AREA BIRDERS: \nThe 2020 Hartford Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will be held on Sunday\, December 20th. \nOur Count is now scheduled on a Sunday to allow for better (and safer) access to numerous areas along the Connecticut River because hunting takes place on Saturdays\, but not on Sundays in those areas.  December 20 th is now less than three weeks away! \nWe continue to remain in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Fortunately\, birding is an activity that is easily done with social distancing and safety protocols in mind.  Our 2019 Hartford Summer Bird Count saw record participation in terms of numbers of participants in the field.  If the weather cooperates\, I hope that we will also see a strong effort on December 20 th. \nThere are safety protocols that we recommend you follow if you plan to participate in this year’s Count.  Please do not carpool unless you are traveling with members of your own family.  In the field\, please maintain proper social distancing and we ask that group sizes be limited to five or fewer people in the same immediate area.  Masks are encouraged if there are others around. \nFinally\, we will not be holding a captains’ meeting this year.  Captains will be emailing their reports to the Compiler\, who will then total the observations from each of the Count’s twelve areas. \nFYI:   For those new to birding or to the Christmas Bird Count\, this is the longest running of all citizen-science surveys.  The Count was begun in 1900 as an alternative to the Christmas hunt during which thousands of birds were shot for dinner or merely for sport.  Christmas Bird Counts provide valuable information on trends in bird populations over time.  The objective of the Count is to census all birds within a seven and one-half mile radius of Hartford’s Old State House on a single day.  As such\, all of Hartford\, West Hartford and East Hartford are within the Count circle\, as well as portions of Windsor\, Bloomfield\, Avon\, Farmington\, Newington\, Wethersfield\, New Britain\, Rocky Hill\, Glastonbury\, Manchester and South Windsor.  Participants may count birds for an hour in their own yard if they live within the Count circle.  Or\, they may join a small team that may venture into the field for part or all of the day\, scouring reservoir lands\, agricultural fields or parks and woodland areas.  Some birders even go out at night in an attempt to call in owls.  Birds that are seen or heard may be counted.  All individual birds rather than just species of birds are counted.  Three days prior to and three days following the Count Day make up what is known as Count Week.  Birds seen during the Count Week\, but not on Count Day\, are considered “Count Week” birds and are noted as to species\, but are not added to the total. \nThe Harford Count is divided into 12 areas\, each with a captain.  Captains and their email addresses are as follows: \nArea #1 South Windsor (Station 43 and surrounding area) – Paul Desjardins  –  paul.desjardins2@gmail.com\, \nArea # South Windsor (upland areas) – Patrice Favreau  –    kestrel.pf@gmail.com \nArea #3 Manchester – Maggie Peretto  –  wings.mp@gmail.com \nArea #4 Glastonbury – Andrew Dasinger  –   amdasinger@gmail.com \nArea #5 Wethersfield/Rocky Hill – Steve Kotchko –  smkbard@cox.net \nArea #6 Hartford – Jay Kaplan –   Jaybrd49@aol.com \nArea #7 Newington – Sylvia Halkin –  halkin@ccsu.edu \nArea #8 Avon/Farmington – Sarah Faulkner –   sffaulkner@comcast.net   \nArea #9 West Hartford – Brian Toal –     briantoal@sbcglobal.net \nArea #10 Bloomfield – Jim Watso –    jcwphotos@cox.net \nArea #11 Windsor – Mike & Judy Whittlesey –  mwhitt15@gmail.com \nArea #12 East Hartford – Blair Wlochowski – wlochowski@sbcglobal.net \nPlease contact the captain of the area in which you might be able to help well in advance of the Count.  Captains are responsible for making certain areas are covered.  We ask that you do not cover an area without letting the captain know so as to make certain areas are not doubly covered or to make certain they are within the Count circle. \nPlease do not hesitate to contact me should there be any questions concerning the Count.  It can be great fun and you might be surprised at what can be found during a day of December birding in the Greater Hartford area. \nJay Kaplan\, Compiler\, Hartford Christmas Bird Count \nJaybrd49@aol.com

SUMMARY:Birding With Your Phone Workshop - 2/26/2022 Report
DESCRIPTION:2/26/2022 Birding with Your Phone Workshop – Report \nEver go birding and see someone bent over their phone\, doing something about birds but you can’t tell what it is?  You’re not alone – many birders are using many apps to improve our skills and log our observations.  This was the impetus for creating our Birding With Your Phone workshop\, presented in February for our third year in a row\, and the second time to be held virtually over Zoom. \nKen Elkins of Audubon Connecticut once again expertly led our attendees through a variety of apps designed for smart phones.  He showed screenshots and provided navigating advice for a number of apps including the Audubon Field Guide\, Merlin\, iNaturalist\, BirdNet\, and the Warbler Guide\, among others.  He ended the program by giving tips about using eBird.   Shown below is a link to a you tube recording of the session. \nhttps://youtu.be/0gubQ9jh2Zc \nIf you could share any feedback from the evaluations you sent after the workshop\, that would be appreciated. All in all\, it was another helpful\, informative workshop – thank you\, Ken!   Sarah Faulkner
