DESCRIPTION:Apr 26 Great Pond\, Simsbury Sat 8 am156 Great Pond Rd\, SimsburyBetween Laurel Ln and Old Farms RdMeet in parking lot at end of entrance dirt road\nApril 26th is the first day of the Spring census. We will try forforest birds before they migrate (like Juncos)\, early spring migrants(Pine warbler\, Blue–headed vireo) and whatever else we can seeand hear. This is a good walk for beginning birders; we will haveextra binoculars. The 2 hour walk is mostly level easy walking onforest paths and rock path over the dam. Beware of the occasionaltree root. If it’s a wet spring\, boots are a good idea; though most ofpaths should be dry. Bug spray good idea. A scope is helpful forscouting the pond\, as is Merlin for birding by song. SarahFaulkner will also be a 3rd leader on this trip.\nDonna Summers djsummers2@comcast.net 860–966–1642 TAlex Sauerbrunn alex.sauerbrunn@gmail.com 860–214–7809 T

DESCRIPTION:Change in meeting location for Hartford Crow Roost trip: update will be sent Friday evening\, Dec. 6!\n\n\nDear people thinking of joining us on Saturday\, Dec. 7\, to observe crows flying into the Hartford roost\, \nDuring the past week the crows have been roosting about half a mile north of where they were last year\, so we should meet to observe them at a location closer to where they will be!  I will track down the roost on Friday evening\, Dec. 6\, in case the crows have moved again\, and then will send another ALLHAS e-mail to let you know where we should meet!  Likely we will meet at the southeast corner of the very large parking lot that surrounds Apple Cinemas\, on the east side of New Park Ave\, but not if the crows have gone elsewhere on Friday\, so please check your e-mail again Friday evening or Saturday morning for the update. \nI am looking forward to our expedition!   Please call me with any questions. \nSylvia Halkin \n(860) 985-7343

SUMMARY:A.W. Stanley Park Bird Walk - October 20\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Oct 20     A.W. Stanley Park\, New Britain  – Sun 9:30 am \n 2159 Stanley St\, New Britain\, CT \n Park in the lot across from the pool building. \n (Note this is NOT Stanley Quarter Park\, also in New Britain) \nA.W. Stanley Park is a New Britain gem\, hosting a diverse community of resident and migratory birds\, with mixed species foraging flocks assembling in October.  We will take a ~2-mile route\, walking on paved and unpaved trails through forested and open areas around the pond\, including a small hill and a cliff overlook\, and returning beside a stream bordering a marsh.  With luck\, the maples will be putting on a colorful display.  If you download the free Merlin Bird ID app to your smartphone in advance\, (https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/download/)\, you can try out its Sound ID on the birds we hear.  Dress appropriately for the weather. We will probably spend a couple of hours in the park\, with many stops.  A 2014 trail guide includes parts of our route; parts of the trail have been re-routed\, and some features have changed (https://visitnbct.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/AW-Stanley-Trail-Guide.pdf).The trip will be cancelled or rescheduled if it’s raining; call to ask if the weather seems borderline. \nSylvia Halkin               halkin@ccsu.edu                    860-985-7343 T
