SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - October 8\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Oct 8               ✪ Monthly Meeting ✪          Tue 7:30 pm \nSocial Time at 7:00 pm \nSt James’s Episcopal Church\,1018 Farmington Ave\, WH \nSpeaker: Sylvia Halkin\, Ph.D. \nChanges in Northern Cardinal Songs Over Time and Space \nA Northern Cardinal learns its songs from its neighbors during its first year of life. The same repertoire of 8-12 songs is sung by all the male and female cardinals in a local population\, but some songs are not sung by cardinals outside that population\, while other songs are much more widespread. To better understand how songs evolve\, in 2021 I recorded cardinals at the same location where I had recorded them intensively in the 1980s!  Some songs had added a new segment but were still recognizable after 40 years; others had been replaced by completely different songs. The long-lasting songs were also the most widespread: they were sung along much of the length of 100-mile N/S and E/W transects centered on the 1980s recording location.  Such widely shared songs may help cardinals to communicate with new neighbors if they settle away from the location where they learned their songs. \n  \nSylvia was a Professor in the Biology Department at CCSU for 30 years\, teaching Ornithology\, Animal Behavior\, Natural History of Connecticut\, Field Biology courses abroad (England\, Ireland\, Australia\, India)\, and other courses to undergraduate and graduate students. Her published research includes articles on how birds use their song repertoires\, nut-caching behavior of eastern gray squirrels (with CCSU student co-authors\, also included in an Animal Planet “Most Extreme Pirates” episode)\, and on foraging niches of Black-capped Chickadees and Tufted Titmice\, Sandy’s Point’s Least Tern colony\, and how strangler figs may help their host trees to weather storms (with CCSU student lead authors John Correia\, Jennifer Healy\, and Leora Richard\, respectively).  She is the lead author of the comprehensive Birds of the World species account for Northern Cardinals\, researched and written with a great team of co-authors. \nFrances D’Amico      frandamico525@yahoo.com      203-237-2734

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - 3/12/2024 - Factors Limiting Warbler Distributions in the Southern Appalachian Mountains
DESCRIPTION:7 pm – Social Hour / 7:30 – Program begins. \nSam Merkel\, Ph.D will be returning to Hartford Audubon to present the program\, Factors Limiting Warbler Distributions in the Southern Appalachian Mountains\, at our Monthly Meeting on March 12.\n\nSpecies’ ranges are shifting northward in response to climate change.  As species’ ranges shift northward\, some species are experiencing rapid declines in the southern limits of their range. The exact factors affecting these declines are not known. Sam will discuss possible factors affecting these declines\, breaking them down into abiotic and biotic factors.  Abiotic factors are those factors which are non-living and physical components of the environment such as temperature and humidity; Biotic factors are those that are living or relate to living organisms such as competition\, predation\, or parasites.  Sam will discuss these factors and how understanding these factors is paramount to enacting successful conservation measures and avoiding local bird extinctions.  Sam’s graduate research was focused on Black-throated Blue Warblers\, Canada Warblers\, and Hooded Warblers in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.  Even though\, his research was centered on the Southern Appalachians\, it will help us better understand what is happening in our own back yard.\n\n\nSam Merker Ph.D. is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut\nPlease reach out to Frances D’Amico with any questions at frandamico525@yahoo.com or 203-237-2734.

DESCRIPTION:7 pm – Social Hour / 7:30 – Program begins. \nSpeaker:  Craig Repasz \nMillions of birds pass through Connecticut every spring and fall on their way to and from their summer nesting grounds. But light pollution has wreaked havoc on our night sky. Artificial light emitted by homes\, buildings\, street lights\, and other structures can confuse and disorient birds\, causing them crash into windows\, and/or circle around for hours until they drop from exhaustion. Craig Repasz is a co-founder and co-chair of Lights Out CT. which advocates for legislation on the state and local level as well as educational outreach in our state. \nPlease reach out to Frances D’Amico with any questions at frandamico525@yahoo.com or 203-237-2734. \n

SUMMARY:Making Beaches Safer for Birds - 4/11/2023
DESCRIPTION:  \nTuesday \, 4/11/2023 \nSpeaker:  Corrie Folsom-O’Keefe \nEach year\, large numbers of shorebirds and seabirds travel along the Atlantic coast. These birds spend their winters in the southern US\, Caribbean\, and South American\, then head north in the spring to breeding grounds in the United States and Canada. In late summer\, these travelers\, joined by the young of the year\, begin the return trip to warmer climates. Beaches\, islands\, inland lakes\, and rivers provide valuable winter\, stopover\, and breeding habitat. Attendees will learn about some of these amazing migrants\, the threats that they face annually and management activities and programs that Audubon and partners have pioneered to reduce these threats. We will finish up with actions that you can take while visiting coastal habitats this summer that can help these beautiful birds reach their destinations and successfully raise their young.  Please contact Fran with any questions. \nFrances D’Amico      frandamico525@yahoo.com  203-237-2734

SUMMARY:Tuning Your Ears for Spring - 3/14/2023
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday – 3/14/2023\nSpeaker:  Ken Elkins \nThere’s a lot to look forward to in spring\, including the welcomed hullabaloo of birdsong. The sheer volume of songs and calls can often feel overwhelming for birders\, but these sounds offer an opportunity and a challenge. You can build your birding skills—and love of birds—by learning how to bird by ear with birding expert Ken Elkins. We’ll begin by growing familiar with neighborhood voices\, distinctive migrant songs\, and review some of the great tools and resources to tune your ears before you venture into the field. Ken has recently rejoined CT Audubon Society (CAS) as the Director of the Milford Point Coastal Center.
