I will also discuss our tracking project in Connecticut including what we have learned\, and new questions generated by the data we have collected. \nSamuel Merker is a postdoctoral researcher at the UConn Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Sam is very interested in learning more about understudied birds like American Bittern. But light pollution has wreaked havoc on our night sky. Artificial light emitted by homes\, buildings\, street lights\, and other structures can confuse and disorient birds\, causing them crash into windows\, and/or circle around for hours until they drop from exhaustion. DESCRIPTION:  \nTuesday \, 4/11/2023 \nSpeaker:  Corrie Folsom-O’Keefe \nEach year\, large numbers of shorebirds and seabirds travel along the Atlantic coast. These birds spend their winters in the southern US\, Caribbean\, and South American\, then head north in the spring to breeding grounds in the United States and Canada. In late summer\, these travelers\, joined by the young of the year\, begin the return trip to warmer climates. Beaches\, islands\, inland lakes\, and rivers provide valuable winter\, stopover\, and breeding habitat. Attendees will learn about some of these amazing migrants\, the threats that they face annually and management activities and programs that Audubon and partners have pioneered to reduce these threats. Maureen is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and has been focusing on bats for over twenty years. DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID concerns\, HAS is offering a different kind of Annual Meeting this year on Tuesday\, May 11th.  We’ll start out with small-group bird walks in Elizabeth Park\, followed by optional boxed dinners to take home\, and culminating with a virtual Annual Meeting and Evening Program.  We hope that many of you will be able to participate in some or all of the activities. \n\n4:30- 5:30 pm\, Guided Bird Walks in Elizabeth Park. We’ll start at the Pond House and fan out from there in small groups\, led by our Board members and experienced trip leaders.  The Pond House Café is located at 1555 Asylum Ave\, West Hartford\, CT.  Masks will be required.\nPre-registration is required.  Please email Annette Pasek by Friday\, May 7th to register for a walk.  apasek@cox.net\n\n5:30 – 6:00 pm: Boxed dinners picked up at the Pond House Café at 1555 Asylum Ave\, West Hartford. DESCRIPTION:ZOOM Meeting on 4/13/20121 from 7 – 8 PM \nProgram:  Milford Point 2020 Nesting Season: Piping Plovers & American Oystercatchers Speaker:      Katerina “Kat” Gillis   The Milford Point shoreline is home to many nesting shorebird species including the American Oystercatcher\,  Least and Common Terns\, and Piping Plover. The birds arrive in late March and spend the duration of the summer nesting and raising their young. The Connecticut Audubon Society and the Audubon Alliance\, help by taking necessary precautions to protect these birds. This presentation highlights the 2020 nesting season for these shorebirds and how these birds were able to overcome the challenges to successfully raise their young. Katerina Gillis is currently working on the last semester of her Master’s thesis program in Wildlife Conservation and Biology at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). She has worked as the Coastal Ranger at Milford Point Audubon assisting in preparations for Piping Plovers’ nesting and engaging with the public. In winters\, Kat is a wildlife technician with CCSU\, installing game cameras throughout the state in hopes to detect Fishers for her thesis.
