DESCRIPTION:Apr 29 🦋 Wildlife Series 🦆 Tue 7:30 pm \n\nGuest Speaker Sir Gerard Ramsawak\n\nMcAuley Residence Auditorium at 275 Steele Rd\, West Hartford.\n\n\nThe Neotropics boasts of about 3\,751 bird species which makes it the most biodiverse region in the world. This represents 90 families\, 28 of which are endemic to this region. It spans over the Americas and the Caribbean with its richest diversity found in Central and South America.\nThere is one Caribbean Island that have been a well-kept secret which rivals its mainland counterpart’s diversity\, and it is Trinidad & Tobago. Trinidad being just about 50 x 39 miles and Tobago 25 x 5 miles (totaling 1\,981 square miles)\, combined they boast of about 489 bird species representing 74 different families.\nSir Gerard Ramsawak will be talking about this rich diversity of neotropical birds\, its accessibility and the rich flora and fauna of this twin island state to support it. He will highlight some of the sought after species and what makes them so unique. Flocks can range in size from just a few birds to tens of thousands\, even millions. Whether they be in the air or on the ground\, they can offer a magnificent spectacle. This presentation asks the question\, why do birds form flocks? And it explores the phenomenon of bird gatherings with vivid photographs\, anecdotes and video clips. In tonight’s program\, Steve will cover the return of the Peregrine\, specifically in Connecticut where there are at least 14 known territorial pairs.  We will learn about the life history strategies of peregrines\, including gender roles\, nest site selection and preparation\, mating\, egg-laying\, care of nestlings and fledglings\, dispersal of young\, site fidelity\, and longevity.  Steve’s illustrated presentation draws on his 25 years of observing and studying peregrines at West Rock Ridge in Woodbridge\, CT\, and East Rock Park in New Haven. Based on her recent book\, this fun presentation will explore the life and times of the noble Turkey Vulture\, including its feeding\, nesting\, and roosting habits\, and common misconceptions. She’ll also discuss being up-close to Turkey and Black Vultures through her work at the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia.  Katie is an educator\, writer\, and Certified Professional Bird Trainer. She writes the column Wingbeats for Bird Watcher’s Digest and is the author of the nonfiction books Vulture (2020\, 2017) and Cerulean Blues (2011)\, and two books for children. DESCRIPTION:Program begins at 7:30 pm \nSpeaker:  Richard Prum\, PhD \nTonight Dr. Prum will present the curious story of Hummingbird plumage and color vision. Yale ornithologist Richard Prum has spent years working with students to understand the full range of colors in birds’ plumage. They use a model based on the range of colors birds can see\, which includes ultraviolet colors that humans can’t see such as ultraviolet yellow and ultraviolet green. Focusing on work conducted by the Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research Program\, it will summarize what we know about population trends\, the factors affecting species persistence\, and conservation work that is being done to protect these birds.  Chris is a professor of conservation biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCONN. His research centers around describing\, understanding\, and mitigating biodiversity loss. Her superpower: saving small\, economically worthless wildlife that would otherwise die. An orphaned jay named Jemima was one such foundling. Spending nearly a year healing\, studying and raising the young blue jay for release into the wild opened the door to their world for Julie. More than a wildlife rehab story\, it’s the story of life\, love and dealing with great loss; of finding grace and redemption in bonding with a wild bird. \nBiography:\nJulie Zickefoose lives and works on an 80-acre wildlife sanctuary in Whipple\, Ohio. Her illustrated work\, The Bluebird Effect\, was an Oprah’s Book Club pick in 2012.  Julie recently became Advising Editor to the updated Bird Watcher’s Digest Magazine. After five years working for Mass Audubon’s Bird Conservation Department\, he went back to school at Tufts University to get his Ph.D studying how the life histories of birds contribute to their vulnerability to decline and extinction. His analysis of long-term data from Manomet Bird Observatory demonstrates the complex responses of migratory birds to a changing climate – a few are prospering\, some are adapting\, but many are suffering greatly.
