DESCRIPTION:Oct 5    Raymond Brook Preserve\, Hebron Sat 7:30 am \nRaymond Brook Preserve \n168 Church St (Rt. 85) Hebron CT \nJoin us in Hebron at this hidden gem hotspot! Trails are mostly flat\, wide\, gravel paths (i.e. easy walking!) through woods/overgrown farm fields\, open grass fields\, and small pond habitat. Loop is about two miles and will probably last around 2 hours. May be a little muddy if recent rain\, but usually not too bad. We will also be able to tour the recently established pollinator garden\, funded by a 2023 HAS grant. There are no restroom facilities at the preserve so please plan accordingly. DESCRIPTION:Oct 8               ✪ Monthly Meeting ✪          Tue 7:30 pm \nSocial Time at 7:00 pm \nSt James’s Episcopal Church\,1018 Farmington Ave\, WH \nSpeaker: Sylvia Halkin\, Ph.D. \nChanges in Northern Cardinal Songs Over Time and Space \nA Northern Cardinal learns its songs from its neighbors during its first year of life. The same repertoire of 8-12 songs is sung by all the male and female cardinals in a local population\, but some songs are not sung by cardinals outside that population\, while other songs are much more widespread. To better understand how songs evolve\, in 2021 I recorded cardinals at the same location where I had recorded them intensively in the 1980s!  Some songs had added a new segment but were still recognizable after 40 years; others had been replaced by completely different songs. The long-lasting songs were also the most widespread: they were sung along much of the length of 100-mile N/S and E/W transects centered on the 1980s recording location.  Such widely shared songs may help cardinals to communicate with new neighbors if they settle away from the location where they learned their songs. \n  \nSylvia was a Professor in the Biology Department at CCSU for 30 years\, teaching Ornithology\, Animal Behavior\, Natural History of Connecticut\, Field Biology courses abroad (England\, Ireland\, Australia\, India)\, and other courses to undergraduate and graduate students. Her published research includes articles on how birds use their song repertoires\, nut-caching behavior of eastern gray squirrels (with CCSU student co-authors\, also included in an Animal Planet “Most Extreme Pirates” episode)\, and on foraging niches of Black-capped Chickadees and Tufted Titmice\, Sandy’s Point’s Least Tern colony\, and how strangler figs may help their host trees to weather storms (with CCSU student lead authors John Correia\, Jennifer Healy\, and Leora Richard\, respectively).  She is the lead author of the comprehensive Birds of the World species account for Northern Cardinals\, researched and written with a great team of co-authors. \nFrances D’Amico      frandamico525@yahoo.com      203-237-2734

Diverse habitat includes\, pond\, marsh\, farmland\, woodlands\, succession growth. Can be very birdy including warblers\, vireos and orioles. Likely some raptors and waterfowl as well as farmland birds such as Bobolink. Protective boots and bug spray may be necessary. Hilly open trails. Flocks can range in size from just a few birds to tens of thousands\, even millions. Whether they be in the air or on the ground\, they can offer a magnificent spectacle. This presentation asks the question\, why do birds form flocks? And it explores the phenomenon of bird gatherings with vivid photographs\, anecdotes and video clips. DESCRIPTION:Oct 20     A.W. Stanley Park\, New Britain  – Sun 9:30 am \n 2159 Stanley St\, New Britain\, CT \n Park in the lot across from the pool building. \n (Note this is NOT Stanley Quarter Park\, also in New Britain) \nA.W. Stanley Park is a New Britain gem\, hosting a diverse community of resident and migratory birds\, with mixed species foraging flocks assembling in October.  We will take a ~2-mile route\, walking on paved and unpaved trails through forested and open areas around the pond\, including a small hill and a cliff overlook\, and returning beside a stream bordering a marsh.  With luck\, the maples will be putting on a colorful display.  If you download the free Merlin Bird ID app to your smartphone in advance\, (https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/download/)\, you can try out its Sound ID on the birds we hear.  Dress appropriately for the weather. DESCRIPTION:It’s that time again!  The Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to announce our eighth annual Hartford County Big January of Birding birdwatching challenge. The goal of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible. The competition is free to people of all ages.  You do not need to be a HAS member or reside in Hartford County to enter.\n\nTo participate\, birders should enter their daily or periodic observations into ebird.org\, the free birdwatching site maintained by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. At the end of the month\, Hartford Audubon will retrieve all the data and award certificates and prizes.
