Based on her recent book\, this fun presentation will explore the life and times of the noble Turkey Vulture\, including its feeding\, nesting\, and roosting habits\, and common misconceptions. She’ll also discuss being up-close to Turkey and Black Vultures through her work at the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia.  Katie is an educator\, writer\, and Certified Professional Bird Trainer. She writes the column Wingbeats for Bird Watcher’s Digest and is the author of the nonfiction books Vulture (2020\, 2017) and Cerulean Blues (2011)\, and two books for children. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - 3/12/2024 - Factors Limiting Warbler Distributions in the Southern Appalachian Mountains
DESCRIPTION:7 pm – Social Hour / 7:30 – Program begins. \nSam Merkel\, Ph.D will be returning to Hartford Audubon to present the program\, Factors Limiting Warbler Distributions in the Southern Appalachian Mountains\, at our Monthly Meeting on March 12.\n\nSpecies’ ranges are shifting northward in response to climate change.  As species’ ranges shift northward\, some species are experiencing rapid declines in the southern limits of their range. The exact factors affecting these declines are not known. Sam will discuss possible factors affecting these declines\, breaking them down into abiotic and biotic factors.  Abiotic factors are those factors which are non-living and physical components of the environment such as temperature and humidity; Biotic factors are those that are living or relate to living organisms such as competition\, predation\, or parasites.  Sam will discuss these factors and how understanding these factors is paramount to enacting successful conservation measures and avoiding local bird extinctions.  Sam’s graduate research was focused on Black-throated Blue Warblers\, Canada Warblers\, and Hooded Warblers in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.  Even though\, his research was centered on the Southern Appalachians\, it will help us better understand what is happening in our own back yard.\n\n\nSam Merker Ph.D. is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut\nPlease reach out to Frances D’Amico with any questions at frandamico525@yahoo.com or 203-237-2734.

SUMMARY:Big January - Bird Event - All Month 1/1 - 1/31/2024
DESCRIPTION:The Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to announce our seventh annual Hartford County Big January of Birding birdwatching challenge.  The goal of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible. The competition is free to people of all ages. You do not need to be a HAS member or reside in Hartford County to enter.\nTo participate\, birders should enter their daily or periodic observations into ebird.org\, the free birdwatching site maintained by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. At the end of the month\, Hartford Audubon will retrieve all the data and award prizes. If you don’t use eBird\, you can list your species\, date seen\, location\, and brief description\, and send it via email or mail right at the end of January; it must be received by Monday\, February 5th. There are four categories:\n\nYouth (ages 4-10) who must see at least 25 species to enter\nTeen (ages 11-17) who must see at least 35 species to enter\nWeekend Warrior (adults ages 18 and up who can’t get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 50 species to enter\nAdults (ages 18 and up who can get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 60 species to enter.\n\nAll entries that meet the minimum number of species for each challenge group will receive a certificate of achievement. A special prize will be awarded for the highest species count for each challenge group\, and the coveted “Golden Grebe” award will be given to the birder finding the most unusual bird.\nJanuary 2024 may be an interesting month and joyful way to enter the new year.\nGive yourself something to look forward to in January!  Everyone is encouraged to join with other HAS members for a friendly competition to find the most bird species in Hartford County this month. \nSarah Faulkner     sffaulkner@comcast.net           860-543-1280 T

DESCRIPTION:4 pm – 5 pm \nWal-mart Supercenter (also called Charter Oak Marketplace) Parking Lot \n495 Flatbush Ave\, Hartford – Park in the row of spaces closest to Newfield Ave\, \njust NW of the NW corner of the Wal-mart Store \nWatching thousands of crows return to their nightly roost is an exciting winter time event.  We’re never sure where the roost will be each night\, but it’s been near here the last several years.  If we can’t see the incoming crows from where we parked\, we will car pool from there.  If the roost is far away in the weeks before Dec. 9\, I’ll update the meeting place using AllHAS.  Dress quite warmly (including warm footwear): we will mostly be standing in one place.  This will probably last about an hour.  Trip will be cancelled or rescheduled if snow or rain is falling or the weather is otherwise dangerous; call to ask if the weather seems borderline. \nSylvia Halkin            halkin@ccsu.edu                860-985-7343 T

DESCRIPTION:Program begins at 7:30 pm \nSpeaker:  Richard Prum\, PhD \nTonight Dr. Prum will present the curious story of Hummingbird plumage and color vision. Yale ornithologist Richard Prum has spent years working with students to understand the full range of colors in birds’ plumage. They use a model based on the range of colors birds can see\, which includes ultraviolet colors that humans can’t see such as ultraviolet yellow and ultraviolet green. Focusing on work conducted by the Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research Program\, it will summarize what we know about population trends\, the factors affecting species persistence\, and conservation work that is being done to protect these birds.  Chris is a professor of conservation biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCONN. His research centers around describing\, understanding\, and mitigating biodiversity loss. DESCRIPTION:Due to the forecast\, the Raymond Brook Preserve\, Hebron bird walk will be moved to Sunday 10/8 at 7:30 am. Meet in the Church Street parking lot. Hope to see you there! \n7:30 am – 930 am. \nRaymond Brook Preserve \n168 Church St (Rt. 85) Hebron CT \nJoin us in Hebron at this hidden gem hotspot! Trails are mostly flat\, wide\, gravel paths (i.e. easy walking!) through woods/ overgrown farm fields\, open grass fields\, and small pond habitat. Loop is about two miles and will probably last around 2 hours. May be a little muddy if recent rain\, but usually not too bad. Hopefully we will be able to see a new planned pollinator garden funded by a HAS grant! There are no restroom facilities at the preserve so please plan accordingly. DESCRIPTION:3 pm – 6:30 pm \nUse 202 Ferry Lane\, South Glastonbury\, CT for a GPS address. \nDrive past house at 202 to the end of lane\, park in lot on left. \nHappy hour time!  Starting at the Connecticut River easy observations from picnic area for common birds\, woodpeckers and gulls\, ducks are likely too!  Migration may bring some surprises.  The big question is when will a Sandhill Crane be spotted in the farm fields?  Flat terrain\, easy birding.  The walk ends around the corner at 275 Dug Rd\, Hops on the Hill Brewery where Thursday evenings they host a Car Cruise Night! Bring a lawn chair. \n  \nTake Route 17 to South Glastonbury\, then turn on Rt. 160 and follow to Ferry.  If you want to take the ferry from Rocky Hill\, take the Silas Dean Highway to CT 160 and follow to Ferry.  The Ferry costs $5 per vehicle and only runs until 6:45pm.  Weather and mechanical issues can affect whether the Ferry is running\, so check the website to be sure. \nhttps://portal.ct.gov/DOT/Traveler/ferries/Rocky-Hill-Ferry \nAnnette Pasek            apasek@cox.net                 860-490-8357 T

DESCRIPTION:8 am – 10 am \nMary Conklin Preserve\, 144 Indian Hill Rd\, Canton\, CT \nFrom Rt 44 follow Indian Hill Rd .9 mi to Spaulding Hill Rd \nGo another .1mi and look for Canton Land Trust sign on left by the driveway. \nJoin us for a two hour leisurely 2-mile hike at this gorgeous preserve owned by the Canton Land Conservation Trust. We’ll see what birds we can find.  Walking is easy on gently rolling trails with minimal elevation\, but footing can be uneven.
