SUMMARY:Hartford County: Big January of Birding Contest!
DESCRIPTION:The Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to announce our third annual Hartford County Big January of Birding birdwatching challenge.  The purpose of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible!  The competition is free to people of all ages. \nBirdwatching is a delightful\, free activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages\, in any setting.  Birds can be seen anywhere – you can watch pigeons\, peregrine falcons and snowy owls in Hartford; count the birds on your feeders from your windows; identify ducks and geese on a local river; or seek rare woodland birds on land trust reserves.  Anywhere you go\, birding is just plain fun.  And this year already we’re seeing unusual numbers of pine siskins and evening grosbeaks at feeders!  January\, 2019 may be a very interesting month. \nTo participate\, birders should enter their daily or periodic observations into ebird.org\, the free birdwatching site maintained by the Cornell University of Ornithology.  At the end of the month\, please create a month-long record of your observations in eBird and share this list with HAS Vice President\, Sarah Faulkner. \nThere are three categories: \n\nYouth (ages 4-10) who must see at least 25 species to enter.\nTeen (ages 11-17) who must see at least 35 species to enter.\nAdults (ages 18 – ?) who must see at least 60 species to enter.\n\nAll entries that meet the minimum number of species for each challenge group will receive a certificate of achievement.  A special prize will be awarded for the highest species count for each group. \nPlease reach out to the following people for more information or if you have any questions: \nCONTACTS:\nSarah Faulkner\, Vice-President\, 860-543-1280\, sffaulkner@comcast.net\nMaggie Peretto\, President\, peretto@cox.net\n

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:For those new to birding or to the Christmas Bird Count\, this is the longest running of all citizen-science surveys. The Count was begun in 1900 as an alternative to the Christmas hunt during which thousands of birds were shot for dinner or merely for sport. Christmas Bird Counts provide valuable information on trends in bird populations over time. The objective of the Count is to census all birds within a seven and one-half mile radius of Hartford’s Old State House on a single day. As such\, all of Hartford\, West Hartford and East Hartford are within the Count circle\, as well as portions of Windsor\, Bloomfield\, Avon\, Farmington\, Newington\, Wethersfield\, New Britain\, Rocky Hill\, Glastonbury\, Manchester and South Windsor. Participants may count birds for an hour in their own yard if they live within the Count circle. Or\, they may join a team that may venture into the field for part or all of the day\, scouring reservoir lands\, agricultural fields or parks and woodland areas.  Some birders even go out at night in an attempt to call in owls.  Birds that are seen or heard may be counted. All individual birds rather than just species of birds are counted. Three days prior to and three days following the Count Day make up what is known as Count Week. Birds seen during the Count Week\, but not on Count Day\, are considered “Count Week” birds and are noted as to species\, but are not added to the total.  In 2017\, a snowy owl was seen the day prior to and the day following the Count\, but not on the Count day itself. That was frustrating! \nThe Hartford Count is divided into 12 areas\, each with a captain. Captains and their email addresses are as follows: \n\nArea #1 South Windsor (Station 43 and surrounding area)\nPaul Desjardins (paul.desjardins2@gmail.com)\nArea #2 South Windsor (upland areas)\nPatrice Favreau (kestrel.pf@gmail.com)\nArea #3 Manchester\nMaggie Peretto (peretto@cox.net)\nArea #4 Glastonbury\nAndrew Dasinger (amdasinger@gmail.com)\nArea #5 Wethersfield/Rocky Hill\nSteve Kotchko (smkbard@cox.net)\nArea #6 Hartford\nJay Kaplan (Jaybrd49@aol.com)\nArea #7 Newington\nSylvia Halkin (halkins@ccsu.edu)\nArea #8 & 9 West Hartford\nBrian Toal (briantoal@sbcglobal.net)\nArea #10 Bloomfield\nJohn Weeks (aerie.john@cox.net)\nArea #11 Windsor\nGil Kleiner (ctwarbler@att.net)\nArea #12 East Hartford\nBlair Wlochowski (wlochowski@sbcglobal.net)\n\nPlease contact the captain of the area in which you might be able to help well in advance of the Count. Captains are responsible for making certain areas are covered. We ask that you do not cover an area without letting the captain know so as to make certain areas are not doubly covered or to make certain they are within the Count circle. \nCaptains will meet on Monday\, December 17th at 7:00 PM at Westmoor Park on Flagg Road in West Hartford for the final compilation. Observers are welcome to attend the compilation meeting. Please do not hesitate to contact me should there be any questions concerning the Count. It can be great fun and you might be surprised at what can be found during a day of birding in the Greater Hartford area. \nAlso available are (1) a map of the Count circle\, (2) a summary of last year’s Count results\, (3) a ten year record of birds seen on the Hartford Count and (4) a rare bird form that can be used for unusual birds that may require documentation. I hope this information will be helpful to Count participants. \nHope you can join us on December 16th. \nBest wishes\,\nJay Kaplan\, Co-Compiler\nHartford Christmas Bird Count
