DESCRIPTION:Month of January – All of Hartford County \nThe Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to announce our sixth annual Hartford County Big January of Birding birdwatching challenge.  Especially in this time of COVID-19 social isolation\, birdwatching can bring tremendous joy.  The purpose of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible.  The competition is free to people of all ages.   You do not need to be an HAS member or reside in Hartford County to enter. \nTo participate\, birders should enter their daily or periodic observations into ebird.org\, the free birdwatching site maintained by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. At the end of the month\, Hartford Audubon will retrieve all the data and award prizes. If you don’t use eBird\, you can list your species\, date seen\, location\, and brief description\, and send it via email or mail right at the end of January; it must be received by Monday\, February 6th.  There are four categories: \n\nYouth (ages 4-10) who must see at least 25 species to enter\nTeen (ages 11-17) who must see at least 35 species to enter\nWeekend Warrior (adults ages 18 and up who can’t get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 50 species to enter\nAdults (ages 18 and up who can get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 60 species to enter.\n\nAll entries that meet the minimum number of species for each challenge group will receive a certificate of achievement.  A special prize will be awarded for the highest species count for each challenge group\, and the coveted “Golden Grebe” award will be given to the birder finding the most unusual bird. \nThus far\, with winter barely starting\, we’ve already seen an increased number of winter finches.  January\, 2023 may be a very interesting month and a joyful way to enter the new year. \nPlease feel free to share this information with all your bird-loving friends.  We’d like nothing more than to hand out dozens of certificates! \nPlease contact Sarah below with any questions regarding this event. \nSarah Faulkner     sffaulkner@comcast.net             860-543-1280

After five years working for Mass Audubon’s Bird Conservation Department\, he went back to school at Tufts University to get his Ph.D studying how the life histories of birds contribute to their vulnerability to decline and extinction. His analysis of long-term data from Manomet Bird Observatory demonstrates the complex responses of migratory birds to a changing climate – a few are prospering\, some are adapting\, but many are suffering greatly. DESCRIPTION:CANCELED :\nSaturday\, March 25\, 2023\nLeader:  Paul Desjardins – starting at 8:30 am \n769 Sachuest Point Rd\, Middletown\, RI  \nSachuest Point Visitor Center parking lot \nGPS Coordinates 41.479909\, -71.243489 \nIf you are looking for colorful\, easy to see birds\, then Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is the place to be. The refuge is home to the second largest wintering population of harlequin ducks on the Atlantic coast. The harlequins\, named after the clowns they resemble\, can be seen along the refuge’s rocky shoreline between November and March each year. By scanning the coastline\, visitors may also see loons\, eiders\, and gannets. More than 200 bird species visit the refuge seasonally\, and other occasional migrating travelers include the peregrine falcon\, northern harrier\, as well as snowy and short-eared owls. Walking the nearly 3 miles of trails around Sachuest Point offers visitors the opportunity to experience several habitats where interesting animals and plants can be observed and photographed. The refuge includes 40 acres of salt marsh lands and steep rocky shorelines around the perimeter. Most visitors enjoy year-round birdwatching\, and elevated observation platforms along the trails provide unobstructed views of the refuge. DESCRIPTION:  \nTuesday \, 4/11/2023 \nSpeaker:  Corrie Folsom-O’Keefe \nEach year\, large numbers of shorebirds and seabirds travel along the Atlantic coast. These birds spend their winters in the southern US\, Caribbean\, and South American\, then head north in the spring to breeding grounds in the United States and Canada. In late summer\, these travelers\, joined by the young of the year\, begin the return trip to warmer climates. Beaches\, islands\, inland lakes\, and rivers provide valuable winter\, stopover\, and breeding habitat. Attendees will learn about some of these amazing migrants\, the threats that they face annually and management activities and programs that Audubon and partners have pioneered to reduce these threats. Her superpower: saving small\, economically worthless wildlife that would otherwise die. An orphaned jay named Jemima was one such foundling. Spending nearly a year healing\, studying and raising the young blue jay for release into the wild opened the door to their world for Julie. More than a wildlife rehab story\, it’s the story of life\, love and dealing with great loss; of finding grace and redemption in bonding with a wild bird. \nBiography:\nJulie Zickefoose lives and works on an 80-acre wildlife sanctuary in Whipple\, Ohio. Her illustrated work\, The Bluebird Effect\, was an Oprah’s Book Club pick in 2012.  Julie recently became Advising Editor to the updated Bird Watcher’s Digest Magazine.
