SUMMARY:Hartford Crow Roost - December 7\, 2024 - 4 pm - Change in meeting location for Hartford Crow Roost trip: update will be sent Friday evening\, Dec. 6!
DESCRIPTION:Change in meeting location for Hartford Crow Roost trip: update will be sent Friday evening\, Dec. 6!\n\n\nDear people thinking of joining us on Saturday\, Dec. 7\, to observe crows flying into the Hartford roost\, \nDuring the past week the crows have been roosting about half a mile north of where they were last year\, so we should meet to observe them at a location closer to where they will be!  I will track down the roost on Friday evening\, Dec. 6\, in case the crows have moved again\, and then will send another ALLHAS e-mail to let you know where we should meet!  Likely we will meet at the southeast corner of the very large parking lot that surrounds Apple Cinemas\, on the east side of New Park Ave\, but not if the crows have gone elsewhere on Friday\, so please check your e-mail again Friday evening or Saturday morning for the update. \nI am looking forward to our expedition!   Please call me with any questions. \nSylvia Halkin \n(860) 985-7343

SUMMARY:Big January - All Month - All of Hartford County
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time again!  The Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to announce our eighth annual Hartford County Big January of Birding birdwatching challenge. The goal of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible. The competition is free to people of all ages.  You do not need to be a HAS member or reside in Hartford County to enter.\n\nTo participate\, birders should enter their daily or periodic observations into ebird.org\, the free birdwatching site maintained by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. At the end of the month\, Hartford Audubon will retrieve all the data and award certificates and prizes. There are four categories:\n    * Youth (ages 4-10) who must see at least 25 species to enter\n    * Teen (ages 11-17) who must see at least 35 species to enter\n    * Weekend Warrior (adults ages 18 and up who can’t get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 50 species to enter\n    * Adults (ages 18 and up who can get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 60 species to enter.\nAll entries that meet the minimum number of species for each challenge group will receive a certificate of achievement.  A special prize will be awarded for the highest species count for each challenge group\, and the coveted “Golden Grebe” award will be given to the birder finding the most unusual bird.\n\nJanuary\, 2025 may be a very interesting month and a joyful way to enter the new year.\nPlease feel free to share this email with all your bird-loving friends.  We’d like nothing more than to hand out dozens of certificates!\n\n\nContact Sarah Faulkner sffaulkner@comcast.net 860–543–1280 T

If it’s a wet spring\, boots are a good idea; though most ofpaths should be dry. Bug spray good idea. A scope is helpful forscouting the pond\, as is Merlin for birding by song.
