SUMMARY:Greenstone Hollow - 2019 Annual Report
DESCRIPTION:Greenstone Hollow Nature Preserve continues to be a place of activity for our members.  This year we held three bird walks with a total attendance of 23.  We added a walk for National Trails Day\, sponsored by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association. \nNo new species were sighted this year\, so the count remains at 118 species at the preserve.  Sandi Jones is making regular visits to the preserve and posting her observations on eBird.  I appreciate birders who enter their sightings on eBird\, and encourage others to visit the preserve and record their checklists. \nWe held six work days\, with an attendance of 24.  Our main focus this year has been on maintaining the trails.  Larry Lunden\, Andrew Smith\, Cathy Delasco\, Doug Beach and Chris Fisher spread 20 cubic yards of mulch\, donated by the town of East Granby\, on the Kinglet Woods Trail to even out the rooty ground.  Roberta Gowing agreed to work on the butterfly garden\, and with the help of Paul and Vicki Margiott cleaned out all the invading plants.  Two of the officers from the East Granby Land Trust\, Cathy Delasco and Michelle Clifford\, joined the crew.  Many thanks to our continuing crew\, including Stan McMillen and Karen Walsh.. \nChris made two major improvements to the preserve.  He installed a new set of trail and overlook name signs to replace the older ones that had deteriorated\, as well as a pair of all new map signs to make it easier to navigate the preserve.  This was funded by a generous donation from Susan and Sammy Samuel\, who live in the neighborhood\, as well as funds approved by the directors of HAS.  He also put a new deck on the bridge at Bluebird Hollow to improve footing. \nOur two benches have deteriorated due to weather and are no longer useable. \nChris and Doug continue to keep the trails mowed and open for visitors. \nOur goals in the coming year are to continue holding bird walks and work days.  We will continue our habitat improvements in the shrub swamp and wet meadow. \nLarry Lunden & Chris Fisher \n

SUMMARY:January 1 - 31\, 2020 - January Big/Birding Event - all month!
DESCRIPTION:The Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to announce our fourth annual Hartford County Big January of Birding bird watching challenge.  The purpose of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible!  The competition is free to people of all ages. \nBird watching is a delightful\, free activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages\, in any setting.  Birds can be seen anywhere – you can watch pigeons\, peregrine falcons and snowy owls in Hartford; count the birds on your feeders from your windows; identify ducks and geese on a local river; or seek rare woodland birds on land trust reserves.  Anywhere you go\, birding is just plain fun.  Thus far\, in early December\, we still have some summer migrants lingering\, and some rare visitors – a Pacific loon on the shore\, catbirds in Canton\, a Western tanager in Torrington.   January\, 2020 may be a very interesting month. \nTo participate\, birders should enter their daily or periodic observations onto ebird.org\, the free bird watching site maintained by the Cornell University of Ornithology. At the end of the month\, please create a month-long record of your observations in ebird and share this list with HAS President\, Sarah Faulkner. \nTo enter\, there are four categories: \n\nYouth (ages 4-10) who must see at least 25 species to enter;\nTeen (ages 11-17) who must see at least 35 species to enter;\nWeekend Warrior (adults ages 18 -? who can’t get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 50 species to enter;\nAdults (ages 18 – ? who can get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 60 species to enter.\n\nAll entries that meet the minimum number of species for each challenge group will receive a certificate of achievement.  A special prize will be awarded for the highest species count for each challenge group. \nFor more information – contact Sarah Faulkner at 860-543-1280 or sffaulkner@comcast.net \n
