Congratulations on the 2021 win and good luck this year!\nPlease join the Hartford Audubon Society on Sunday\, March 14th to celebrate the return of daylight savings time with a one-day bird-a-thon. \n\nBird by teams (2-4 people) – Teams should have names and are encouraged to “go crazy” with hats\, tee-shirts\, and decorations! SUMMARY:Sachuest Point N W R - Trip Report - March 27\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 27 eighteen people gathered for my annual Rhode Island trip at Sachuest Point N W R under a beautiful sunny sky.\n\nWe started out along the trail at the oceans edge quickly spotting several waterfowl species such as Buffleheads\, Common Goldeneyes\, Common Eiders and Black Scoters as well as several Horned Grebes and a Red Throated Loon. We soon ran into a local birder who informed us that there were only a couple of Harlequin Ducks present. Boy was she wrong! As we rounded the bend we spotted probably 30 or more of them and they were close in affording excellent views! Also seen on the off shore rocks were a number of Great Cormorants.\n\nOur next stop took us to Trustom Pond N W R where we always add songbirds to the list as well as more duck species. Here we added common birds such as Black Capped Chickadees\, Tufted Titmice\, White Breasted Nuthatches etc which we see every year but the male Eastern Towhee was a nice addition. Also heard but not seen was an Eastern Phoebe. This was near the bird feeders and the parking lot. As we ventured along the trail near the open field we saw the first Tree Swallows of the day. Upon arriving at the pond we added additional duck species such as both Scaup\, Common Mergansers and Ruddy Ducks. One birder spotted a far off Northern Gannet  and there was a pair of Ospreys here.\n\nOur last stop was at Ninigret Park where we hoped to see the long staying Lesser Black Backed Gull but unfortunately it could not be found. Here a Killdeer was seen for our only shorebird of the trip. We ended up with 52 species which is somewhat lower than I had anticipated but it still was a fun trip.\n\nPaul Desjardins\, guide

DESCRIPTION:Mar 27 \, 2021    Sachuest Point\, Rhode Island Sat 8:30 am \n769 Sachuest Point Rd\, Middletown\, RI  \nSachuest Point Visitor Center Parking Lot \nGPS Coordinates 41.479909\, -71.243489 \nIf you are looking for colorful\, easy to see birds\, then Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is the place to be. The refuge is home to the second largest wintering population of harlequin ducks on the Atlantic coast. The harlequins\, named after the clowns they resemble\, can be seen along the refuge’s rocky shoreline between November and March each year. By scanning the coastline\, visitors may also see loons\, eiders\, and gannets. More than 200 bird species visit the refuge seasonally\, and other occasional migrating travelers include the peregrine falcon\, northern harrier\, as well as snowy and short-eared owls. Walking the nearly 3 miles of trails around Sachuest Point offers visitors the opportunity to experience several habitats where interesting animals and plants can be observed and photographed. The refuge includes 40 acres of salt marsh lands and steep rocky shorelines around the perimeter. Most visitors enjoy year-round birdwatching\, and elevated observation platforms along the trails provide unobstructed views of the refuge. DESCRIPTION:ZOOM Meeting on 4/13/20121 from 7 – 8 PM \nProgram:  Milford Point 2020 Nesting Season: Piping Plovers & American Oystercatchers Speaker:      Katerina “Kat” Gillis   The Milford Point shoreline is home to many nesting shorebird species including the American Oystercatcher\,  Least and Common Terns\, and Piping Plover. The birds arrive in late March and spend the duration of the summer nesting and raising their young. The Connecticut Audubon Society and the Audubon Alliance\, help by taking necessary precautions to protect these birds. This presentation highlights the 2020 nesting season for these shorebirds and how these birds were able to overcome the challenges to successfully raise their young. Katerina Gillis is currently working on the last semester of her Master’s thesis program in Wildlife Conservation and Biology at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). She has worked as the Coastal Ranger at Milford Point Audubon assisting in preparations for Piping Plovers’ nesting and engaging with the public. In winters\, Kat is a wildlife technician with CCSU\, installing game cameras throughout the state in hopes to detect Fishers for her thesis. DESCRIPTION:May 5 2021 WEDNESDAY \n8:30 AM. (approximately 2 hours planned). \nLocation: Lewis Farm Sanctuary  – Address:  1035 Hill St. Suffield\, CT \nWhere to park:  Park off road on the WEST side only (by the sign for the Sanctuary)  Limited parking and use caution pulling off the road curbing onto woodchip area.  Very poor sight line for oncoming traffic on this busy through town street. \nBring your binoculars\, apply some bug spray  and wear light hikers as we set off on the beautifully maintained trails in this sanctuary.  We will cover mixed terrain of low hills and mostly dry trails\, crossing a babbling brook and meandering around a pond.   We will keep our eyes peeled for warblers and other spring birds.  When our necks are tired from scanning the treetops\, we can admire the variety of wildflowers that sprout up near the trail. DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID concerns\, HAS is offering a different kind of Annual Meeting this year on Tuesday\, May 11th.  We’ll start out with small-group bird walks in Elizabeth Park\, followed by optional boxed dinners to take home\, and culminating with a virtual Annual Meeting and Evening Program.  We hope that many of you will be able to participate in some or all of the activities. \n\n4:30- 5:30 pm\, Guided Bird Walks in Elizabeth Park. We’ll start at the Pond House and fan out from there in small groups\, led by our Board members and experienced trip leaders.  The Pond House Café is located at 1555 Asylum Ave\, West Hartford\, CT.  Masks will be required.\nPre-registration is required.  Please email Annette Pasek by Friday\, May 7th to register for a walk.  apasek@cox.net\n\n5:30 – 6:00 pm: Boxed dinners picked up at the Pond House Café at 1555 Asylum Ave\, West Hartford.
