SUMMARY:Tuning Your Ears for Spring - 3/14/2023
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday – 3/14/2023\nSpeaker:  Ken Elkins \nThere’s a lot to look forward to in spring\, including the welcomed hullabaloo of birdsong. The sheer volume of songs and calls can often feel overwhelming for birders\, but these sounds offer an opportunity and a challenge. You can build your birding skills—and love of birds—by learning how to bird by ear with birding expert Ken Elkins. We’ll begin by growing familiar with neighborhood voices\, distinctive migrant songs\, and review some of the great tools and resources to tune your ears before you venture into the field. Ken has recently rejoined CT Audubon Society (CAS) as the Director of the Milford Point Coastal Center. Please contact Fran with any questions. \nFrances D’Amico      frandamico525@yahoo.com  203-237-2734

SUMMARY:Effects of Climate Change on Migratory Patterns of Birds - 3/21/2023
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 3/21/2023 \nSpeaker:  Matthew Kamm \nMatthew Kamm has been birding since the age of eight and has followed his passion for nature (especially birds) throughout his schooling and professional work. After five years working for Mass Audubon’s Bird Conservation Department\, he went back to school at Tufts University to get his Ph.D studying how the life histories of birds contribute to their vulnerability to decline and extinction. His analysis of long-term data from Manomet Bird Observatory demonstrates the complex responses of migratory birds to a changing climate – a few are prospering\, some are adapting\, but many are suffering greatly. Now\, as Conservation Outreach Coordinator for Zoo New England\, Matt loves nothing more than sharing the wonders of the natural world with the interested public.  Please call Frances with any questions. \nFrances D’Amico      frandamico525@yahoo.com      203-237-2734 \n

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Sachuest Point\, RI - 3/25/2023
DESCRIPTION:CANCELED :\nSaturday\, March 25\, 2023\nLeader:  Paul Desjardins – starting at 8:30 am \n769 Sachuest Point Rd\, Middletown\, RI \nSachuest Point Visitor Center parking lot \nGPS Coordinates 41.479909\, -71.243489 \nIf you are looking for colorful\, easy to see birds\, then Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is the place to be. The refuge is home to the second largest wintering population of harlequin ducks on the Atlantic coast. The harlequins\, named after the clowns they resemble\, can be seen along the refuge’s rocky shoreline between November and March each year. By scanning the coastline\, visitors may also see loons\, eiders\, and gannets. More than 200 bird species visit the refuge seasonally\, and other occasional migrating travelers include the peregrine falcon\, northern harrier\, as well as snowy and short-eared owls. Walking the nearly 3 miles of trails around Sachuest Point offers visitors the opportunity to experience several habitats where interesting animals and plants can be observed and photographed. The refuge includes 40 acres of salt marsh lands and steep rocky shorelines around the perimeter. Most visitors enjoy year-round birdwatching\, and elevated observation platforms along the trails provide unobstructed views of the refuge. A short distance away at Third Beach is our recently restored salt marsh habitat\, a new birding “hotspot” and a favorite of birders and non-birders alike.  Dress Warmly and bring a lunch. \nPaul Desjardins     Paul.Desjardins2@gmail.com      860-623-3696
