SUMMARY:Raymond Brook Preserve\, Hebron Bird Walk- Changed to Sunday 10/8/23 due to rain forecast
DESCRIPTION:Due to the forecast\, the Raymond Brook Preserve\, Hebron bird walk will be moved to Sunday 10/8 at 7:30 am. Meet in the Church Street parking lot. Hope to see you there! \n7:30 am – 930 am. \nRaymond Brook Preserve \n168 Church St (Rt. 85) Hebron CT \nJoin us in Hebron at this hidden gem hotspot! Trails are mostly flat\, wide\, gravel paths (i.e. easy walking!) through woods/ overgrown farm fields\, open grass fields\, and small pond habitat. Loop is about two miles and will probably last around 2 hours. May be a little muddy if recent rain\, but usually not too bad. Hopefully we will be able to see a new planned pollinator garden funded by a HAS grant! There are no restroom facilities at the preserve so please plan accordingly. Afterwards those interested can join us at the Flour Girl Cafe (12 Main St\, Hebron) for coffee and swapping bird stories. \nGabrielle & Will Bugden     gvonp27@gmail.com   860-490-5112 T

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - 10/10/2023 - Where Are All the Shy Folk? Tracking American Bitterns in Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:7 pm – Social Hour / 7:30 – Program begins. \nSpeaker: Samuel Merker\, Ph.D. \nThe presentation will cover the natural history\, ecology\, knowledge gaps\, and trivia of the American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus). I will also discuss our tracking project in Connecticut including what we have learned\, and new questions generated by the data we have collected. \nSamuel Merker is a postdoctoral researcher at the UConn Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Sam is very interested in learning more about understudied birds like American Bittern. He spends his free time bird watching\, hiking\, woodworking\, and generally tinkering with things. \nPlease reach out to Frances D’Amico with any questions at frandamico525@yahoo.com or 203-237-2734. \n

DESCRIPTION:8:30 am – approximately 11 am \n116 North School St\, Manchester \nMeet in Parking Lot \nI’ve birded this area and thought it would make a nice HAS bird walk. Union Pond Park has a beautiful woods trail which we will explore. This is a new area for Hartford Audubon to run a trip and I am hoping that we can all work together to find fall birds\, perhaps a few late migrating warblers and some waterfowl. \nMaxwell Toth       MaxToth7780@aol.com           860-614-6095 T

SUMMARY:Wildlife Series - 10/17/2023 - Conservation of Saltmarsh Birds in the Face of Sea-Level Rise
DESCRIPTION:Program begins at 7:30 pm \nSpeaker: Chris Elphick\, Ph.D. \nChris will present information on the status of tidal marsh nesting birds in the northeast. Focusing on work conducted by the Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research Program\, it will summarize what we know about population trends\, the factors affecting species persistence\, and conservation work that is being done to protect these birds.  Chris is a professor of conservation biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCONN. His research centers around describing\, understanding\, and mitigating biodiversity loss. He has been studying coastal marsh birds and their habitats since 2002. \nPlease reach out to Frances D’Amico with any questions at frandamico525@yahoo.com or 203-237-2734. \n
