SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting 4/9/2024: Bobcat – Connecticut’s Secretive Wild Cat
DESCRIPTION:The Hartford Audubon April 9 in-person meeting will be held at St James’ Episcopal Church on 1018 Farmington Ave\, beginning with social time at 7:00\, followed by the business meeting at 7:30. The meeting will also be available on Zoom for those who cannot attend in person.\n\nSpeaker: Paul Colburn\n\nAt 8:00\, our speaker\, Paul Colburn will be presenting the program “Bobcat – Connecticut’s Secretive Wild Cat” seen via Zoom to those in attendance at St James and those attending the business meeting via Zoom from home. This talk may be of particular interest to those who live in or near northern Hartford County where Bobcats are seen.\n\nPaul is a Master Wildlife Conservationist. His training with the MWCP is part of an adult education program offered by DEEP (Dept. of Energy & Environmental Protection). This program trains volunteers in the fields of wildlife management\, natural history and interpretation.  Paul is a dedicated advocate for wildlife and is passionate about sharing his knowledge with others.  He is particularly focused on teaching the basics of living responsibly with wildlife.

DESCRIPTION:Program begins at 7:30 pm \nSpeaker: Steve Broker \n“By the mid-1960s\, peregrines had become extirpated east of the Rocky Mountains. In tonight’s program\, Steve will cover the return of the Peregrine\, specifically in Connecticut where there are at least 14 known territorial pairs.  We will learn about the life history strategies of peregrines\, including gender roles\, nest site selection and preparation\, mating\, egg-laying\, care of nestlings and fledglings\, dispersal of young\, site fidelity\, and longevity.  Steve’s illustrated presentation draws on his 25 years of observing and studying peregrines at West Rock Ridge in Woodbridge\, CT\, and East Rock Park in New Haven. DESCRIPTION:8 am – 11 am \n953 Main St\, South Windsor \nCorner of Newberry Rd and Main St \nPark along road near intersection. \nThe fourth of four morning walks designed for beginners at Hartford Audubon’s oldest sanctuary. DESCRIPTION:8 am to potentially 11 am \nEntrance is just beyond 451 Great Pond Rd\, Glastonbury\, on left \n From Rt. 17 – use south entrance to Great Pond Rd and \ndrive in 0.2 mi.  Park on south side away from hydrants. \nExpect common CT birds as well as migratory. Habitat varies\, woodland\, water\, shrub and field.  Count on chickadee\, nuthatch\, jay\, cardinal\, wren.  Many hawk\, duck and sparrow species.  There are always some surprises. 2.5 mile walk. Hilly terrain. DESCRIPTION:8 am – to potentially 11 am \n202 Bark Haul Rd\, Longmeadow\, MA \nPark by sign at the end of the road \nA wonderful mix of ponds\, swamps\, woods\, and fields Fannie Stebbins has ideal habitat for a wide variety of birds. The loop trail we will take is 2.2 miles long and brings us along or through all of the habitats. This is an easy walk\, although it may be wet or muddy in places.
