His early interest in natural history led himto a biology major at Cornell University\, where he later earned hisPh.D. From 1998 until his retirement in 2021\, he was the seniorornithologist at the National Fish and Wildlife ForensicLaboratory\, where he analyzed bird remains in wildlife crimecases\, and created the Feather Atlas of North American Birds\, thepremier feather identification website.
