Greenstone Hollow Update from Chris Fisher – 5/9/2020

May 11, 2020

Greenstone Hollow Update from Chris Fisher:

Hi Everyone – I wanted to give you an update on work that’s been going on at our Greenstone Hollow Nature Preserve in East Granby.

The Butterfly Garden has beautiful bulbs blooming that Roberta Gowing and friends planted last year.

Cathy Delasco placed two bluebird houses at the corners of the garden and at least one of them has a Tree Swallow family in residence.  Cathy, Drew Smith and Michelle Clifford and I have been spreading 8 truckloads of mulch given to us by the town of East Granby.

We have almost finished spreading it on the entire Wood Thrush trail on the south side of Ridge Road. This trail goes through a lot of nice habitat, but was hard walking because it tended to be muddy and have a lot of above ground roots to trip on.

Now it is really pleasant walking – come give it a try.

As we were working we heard Blue-winged Warblers, Black-and-White Warblers, Common Yellowthroats and Northern Parulas.

Larry Lunden heard and saw several of those and more as he did his bird survey to report to E-bird.

Finally, Diane and I have put in 3 new benches and may get a couple more in today.  There’s one at the Butterfly Garden, one at Yellowthroat Overlook and one at Bluebird Hollow.

So come out and explore this lovely spot.  It’s a nice, uncrowded place to get outdoors.
